Inspiron 9300, ATI Radeon X300, black screen after XP boot screen.

This is a Dell inspiron 9300 Laptop with ATI Radeon X300, 64 Mb mem, plug in internal display card, and XP operating system. Laptop screen always works in boot up and save mode. After displaying the XP boot logo the screen goes black. External plug in monitor always works.

Ran Dell Diagnostics, no problem. Tried another built in screen, same result.

Ive tried all the remedies suggested on this forum under black screen and reed switch to no avail,( Disconnected the cable to the touch pad to isolate the reed switch). I'm starting to loose hair. Even used the latest ATI driver with the "Mobility Mod Tool" as talked about in Tom'sharware Forum, no change. When working with external monitor, AIDA32 system info says there is no built in LCD. I've done a clean install from the hidden back up partition, installed all drivers, no luck.

This problem started after doing extensive updates; cause the Laptop sat idle for over 3 Years. Screen went black for 10 minutes, worked again, then blacked out in shorter times and then completely.

Is it possible the display card is defective in its full resolution of 1900 by 1100 or so. I always felt it was a soft ware issue cause safe mode works forever. Now I'm completely out of ideas. I don't have access to a replacement display card to test it.

From other post there appears to be a problem getting the display to work after a reinstall of XP.

Would hate to toss this laptop, since everything else still works great. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!
