I do not now how helpful this might be - but I just had a similar issue with a Vostro 1000. A bit of background on the issue:

Initially the screen seemed completely black out (inactive), when hitting the F2 key to access the Bios and then the F1 - I noticed a very faint image. Using a flashlight pointed down on the screen (not at the screen just from the upper edge down towards the KB) - I was surprised to see there was the complete image hidden in the darkness.

At first I thought that maybe the backlight was bad so I switched out screens o test... that did not work!

I then removed the central control cover and KB - unhooked the wiring that went to the screen - and reseated it. I can say with a smile it worked! and is working still.
