Hey,
I have just purchased a Dell Xps 15 L502x with a GeForce GT540M 2GB with Optimus video card and have encountered a what I can call a common issue. Although I've seen many cases of it, I haven't found a solution.
The problem is that when running games or anything that uses the dedicated graphics card there are random fps drops and buzzy sound for a second or two (sometimes ending in computer crashes). This results in a unpleasant gaming of working experience. Disabling the GeForce card works fine but obviously most games become unplayable.
I understand how Optimus technology works (set corresponding options to use the correct GPU) and have updated all drivers to their latest versions (beta / also tried lots of other versions) but that does not solve the problem.
By monitoring the GPU load it is working perfectly during stress tests but when running application such as games the gpu load percentage suddenly drops for no reason resulting in a lag spike with the sound glitch. It may be an issue with optimus trying to switch to the Integrated GPU.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Otherwise I might have to return my laptop as soon as possible.
