Don't know where to post this so I put it here
I have a Dell Studio 1749 with an i3-350m, 6GB RAM, Win7 x64 Home Premium, 500GB drive, HD Touchscreen and the Intel 5650 onboard video. I bought it brand new in 2010 and have already upgraded the RAM. Everything else is in tip top shape. Never dropped. Used mainly for school and such. It is out of warranty now for about a year. I open up everything digital in my house and tinker on it. I just last week tore apart my PlayStation 3 and replaced the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU before the YLOD came around.
I want to upgrade my slot drive DVD-Burner in my 1749 and replace it with a Blu-Ray Slot Player (Not Burner) it came off of a 1747 I believe. I am pretty sure it will drop into place. Anyone know of a tech guide to install it step by step?
I also want to upgrade the CPU. I would like a little more performance out of the machine now as I don't need it for just e-Books anymore. From the reading I have done, I can upgrade to another chip as long as it is not a Quad core. I was contemplating on the i7-620m. I believe that 2.66GHz with 3.3Ghz Turbo (Mine is 2.2GHz). My Motherboard is an HM55. Will the turbo be able to be triggered with my existing case? IIRC, it has something to do with the power button on the hinge.
I know the video is integrated...is there anyway to install a video card on this machine? I believe there is a PCI slot available.
Thanks in advance,
